What is AI?

AI (Artificial Intelligence) is when computers or machines are made to think and act like humans.

AI (Artificial Intelligence) is the simulation of human intelligence by machines, especially computer systems. It enables computers to learn from data, recognise patterns, make decisions, and even perform tasks that typically require human intelligence—like understanding language, recognising images, or solving problems.

  • Understand things (like voice commands or pictures)
  • Learn from experience (like how YouTube recommends videos)
  • Make smart choices (like self-driving cars or chatbots)
Simple Example: When you say, "Hey Siri, what’s the weather?" and your phone answers — that’s AI in action.

Types of AI:

  1. Based on Capabilities:

    • Narrow AI (Weak AI):
Performs specific tasks (e.g., Siri, Google Assistant). Most current AI falls under this.

    • General AI (Strong AI):
Performs any intellectual task that a human can do. Still theoretical.

    • Super AI:
Surpasses human intelligence in all fields. Purely hypothetical for now.

  2. Based on Functionality:

    • Reactive Machines:
No memory, reacts only to current input (e.g., IBM’s Deep Blue chess computer).

    • Limited Memory:
Can use past experiences to inform decisions (e.g., self-driving cars).

    • Theory of Mind:
Future AI that can understand emotions, beliefs, intentions.

    • Self-aware AI:
Sentient and conscious. This is speculative and not yet realised.

Conclusion:

Artificial Intelligence is no longer just a futuristic concept—it’s a powerful force shaping our everyday lives. From improving healthcare and enhancing productivity to transforming education and entertainment, AI offers countless benefits. However, it also brings challenges like job displacement, privacy concerns, and ethical dilemmas.

To truly harness the power of AI, we must balance innovation with responsibility, ensuring that AI serves humanity, supports equity, and remains under thoughtful human control. The future with AI is promising—as long as we guide it wisely.
